Officials of the UK will be not capable to stop sportspeople importing steroids to the UK, when they come to participate in the 2012 Olympics. Although application of steroids is forbidden in sports, personal administration of these drugs is not criminal in the UK. Just sale of steroids is claimed to be illegal in this country. So, if someone desires to import quantity of anabolic steroids which is essentially large, he/she will not be allowed to do it.
Before Olympic Games took place in Australia, Canada and China, governments of these countries modified legislation linked with import and administration of steroids at least temporally. But the British government doesn’t agree to change steroid legislation for the 2012 Summer Olympics.
Ironically, however the British government doesn’t desire to make personal intake of steroids illicit, Britain athletes are banned for lifetime, if they use anabolic steroids. As for the WADA Code, sportspeople that administer banned drugs are banned for 2 years.
Hugh Robertson, the Olympic minister, confirms that it is needed to have a universal law linked with sentencing. He insists on at least 4 years or even longer. Although this minister is supported by the British Olympic Association, the UK Anti-Doping Agency doesn’t agree with such harsh sanction. Andy Parkinson, the CEO of the UK Anti-Doping Agency, believes that several sanctions must be milder.
Hugh Robertson acknowledges that there are different points of view in sports and it’s not well but he doesn’t ask the CEO of the UKAD to resign.
The spokesman for the minister has claimed that any sportsperson can have steroids in his/her luggage, when he/she comes to London. But the quantity of steroids must confirm that he/she has them only for self-administration. The spokesperson has added that it is not criminal for a sportsperson to apply steroids under laws of the UK but if any sportsperson is caught taking banned medicines, he/she will be punished under anti-doping laws.
The UKAD stated that they would collaborate with border control officers. Information about sportspeople will be used by anti-doping agencies.
5, 000 drug tests will be conducted by the International Olympic Committee. 1, 000 of these tests will be blood tests.
